The 2026 New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) performance period began on Thursday 1 January 2026 and ends Thursday 31 December 2026. This is the first full performance period since the NVES was established. Vehicle emissions values have been updated for this performance period, in line with the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard Act 2024(Opens in a new tab/window) (NVES Act).
To comply with the NVES, regulated entities must have an interim emissions value (IEV) of zero or less for the performance period. An IEV is an entity’s total emissions across the fleet of cars they supply to the Australian market in the year. If an entity’s IEV is less than zero, they will receive NVES units.
IEVs and associated NVES units for the 2025 performance period will be issued through the NVES Portal and NVES Unit Registry in February 2026.
IEVs and associated units for the 2026 performance period will be available in February 2027.
