The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard Act 2024(Opens in a new tab/window) (NVES Act), outlines the responsibilities of the NVES Regulator and details all compliance requirements for regulated entities.
The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard Determination 2024(Opens in a new tab/window) specifies the types of vehicles currently exempt.
NVES rules will provide practical information about how the Act operates. These are still under development, and we will publish them once in place.
The NVES Act and operation of the NVES Regulator is supported by additional legislation, including:
- To be compliant with the NVES Act regulated entities must enter data on the Register of Approved Vehicles(Opens in a new tab/window) (RAV) under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018(Opens in a new tab/window) (RVSA). More information on the RVSA and its rules and determinations can be found on the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts website(Opens in a new tab/window).
There are also a number of Australian Design Rules (ADRs) made under the RVSA Act that are relevant to the NVES, specifically:
- Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule – Definitions and Vehicle Categories) 2005(Opens in a new tab/window) which contains the vehicle categories used in the NVES Act
- Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 81/02 – Fuel Consumption Labelling for Light Vehicles) 2008(Opens in a new tab/window) which provides the methodology for the vehicle emissions values used in the NVES.
